Preparing for an El Nino Year

  • September 22, 2015

This year is being categorized as an El Nino year, meaning the warmer weather of the summer months could greatly affect the winter we face ahead. The sea surface temperatures are trending higher than normal indicating the likely outcome will be a wetter-than-usual winter with storms sweeping the nation. So how should you prepare for a winter that could bring weather stronger or different than what we are accustomed to?

1. Know Your Area – Research thoroughly. Is your area prone to flooding, tornadoes, or snowstorms? Knowing what is common and being able to prepare for this plus additional inclement weather is key.

2. Follow the News – For the most up to date and accurate news, check out NOAA Climate regularly. This website features easy-to-understand explanations, charts, and the latest information on the weather nationally as well as what to expect.

3. Prepare Efficiently – Whether you get sandbags, stalk up on canned goods and an emergency supply of water, or cut back branches that are hanging over your home, preparing efficiently for potential storms will keep you and your home safer. Don’t wait until the storm begins rolling in to start thinking about these things. Early preparation is important when protecting your home.

4. Be Smart – Unfortunately, sometimes you must take action in the middle of a storm in order to protect yourself or your property. But for the most cases, be smart when it comes to safety. If you don’t have to drive in a storm, stay safely indoors.

Keep a watch for changes this El Nino year and plan accordingly.
