8 Steps to a Perfect Home Office

Blog posted On May 08, 2015

Working from home has some major benefits. Making sure you have a proper workspace set up will only help enhance your productivity and success. Whether your home office needs revamping or you are just creating one, here are eight tips to ensure the space is built for optimal success.

1. Ventilation – Use a room or space with plenty of light and a window for fresh air. Working in a cramped or stuffy area without much airflow can drag your body down and prevents you being alert and focused on your work.

2. Quiet – A quiet space is also essential. While having a door might seem like something you do not need for a home office, we suggest making sure you have the opportunity to close out unwanted distractions if necessary.

3. Work Only – Avoid extra distractions by keeping your home office free of any non-work-related clutter. No laundry baskets or anything that could remind you of chores needing to be taken care of. Keeping your work area solely focused on work will allow you to stay focused and productive.

4. Shelves and Organization – Keep your space organized with shelves or cabinets. Not only will this allow you to productively move through your day and complete projects but also any children or pets around will not be able to get ahold of papers and folders left out.

5. Ergonomically Correct – Just because you are not in a traditional office setting does not mean you can overlook the importance of being ergonomically correct. Adjust your desk, chair, computer screens, and keyboards to ensure proper posture. Your body and mind will thank you!

6. Be Well-Stocked – Keep your office well-stocked with paper, ink, supplies, and snacks to avoid losing your workflow and having to run out for items. This will also help you maintain more control of your environment allowing you to focus on what really matters: your work.

7. Thinking Chair – Having a “thinking chair” might seem like a funny idea but it actually allows your mind and body to literally step away from your desk and think more clearly in a slightly different environment. Have a comfy chair nearby to curl up on when reading reports or brainstorming your next big project.

8. Personalization – Decorating with pictures, knick-knacks, and items that represent you or calm you helps make the space your own. To prevent these items from becoming wallpaper your rarely glance at, refresh often! Swap out pictures quarterly, get new toys, and rearrange your space frequently to give off a new vibe. It’s amazing what a slightly revamped atmosphere can do for your motivation and thinking.
