Building a Professional Facebook Profile

Facebook is the most used social media platform in the world. So it only makes sense, as a business professional, for you to have a presence where the majority of the population connect, find information, and begin conversations. But Facebook was not initially designed to connect professionals or promote business like LinkedIn. It has evolved over time to meet the demand of this need in society. So what are the steps you should take to make sure your profile is viewed as a professional and a trusted resource for consumers?
 
1. Professional Picture – A good first impression starts with having a professional headshot as your profile picture. Avoid pictures of pets, scenery, or group shots. It is important to accurately convey who you are and consumers are more likely to trust a profile with a truly representative picture.
 
2. Resourceful Posts – Devise a schedule to distribute useful and pertinent information about your business. Whether you are sharing an important article, updating your followers on your latest business endeavor, or commenting on other posts within your industry, keep a steady flow of engagement. Do not bombard your followers with fifteen posts one morning and then radio silence for the next week. Also be sure to respect the privacy of others when posting information.
 
3. Contact and Licensing Information – Use the About section appropriately; to let people know who you are and how to contact you. Be upfront with your licensing numbers and qualifications in a clear and concise way. Having these items clearly listed on your profile is a sure way to gain trust. Also include the statement “All posts and opinions are my own.” This ensures you are not intending to speak for another person or business but rather sharing your own thoughts based on your professional experience.
 
4. “Business Casual” Mentality – Facebook is a great tool to mix business with personal life. But a good rule to stick to is the “business casual” mentality. Always think in an office/work appropriate mind frame. Would pictures of your family at the holidays be appropriate? Most likely. How about that photo album of you partying on New Year’s Eve? We suggest leaving that one out. Remember, this could be someone’s first impression of you and the deciding factor in their choosing to give you their business or not. Make the impression a professional one.
 
Facebook has transformed into a tool used by all. It is a perfect way to start and engage in relevant conversations, whether catching up with old classmates or spreading the news about your business. Make sure you build a robust and professional presence on this platform.
