Homeowners: Don't Make These Costly Mistakes

Blog posted On January 14, 2016

It’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind of life. But as a homeowner, you have extra responsibilities for maintaining a property. Make sure you avoid making these costly mistakes with your home.

Not Cleaning Debris – Avoiding cleaning out gutters, roof crevices, and debris from areas like vents and appliances causes buildup. Over time, this buildup can turn into an expensive repair project when it causes some serious issues.

Not Completing Inspections – Inspections give a homeowner the insight they need on the property. When first purchasing the home, an initial inspection is conducted to ensure the home is in good order and there will not be any hidden issues the buyer will be forced to deal with after the loan is funded. However, inspections shouldn’t stop there. Whether hiring a professional annually to inspect the HVAC system or doing an inspection yourself by simply walking around the property and noting any issues that may be new, doing this regularly is important. It could save you a lot of money by preventing issues before they arise or taking care of something that appears to have gotten worse since the last time you checked on it.

Subpar Renovations – It’s obvious to many when they walk into a “newly renovated” kitchen and only the surface areas have been upgraded. Doing a job only halfway is only going to cost you money because an uncompleted job will not increase the value of your home and will most likely cause more issues later. When considering a renovation, think the project through thoroughly before tackling it.

Hiring the First Company – Not shopping around usually results in your paying more for a project. Shop around and tell people what others would charge you for the same work. This is a great way to get your price down and get the best deal. Hiring the first company without researching what others offer or potential deals/sales being offered could result in your paying a lot more for a project you could have saved on.

Be smart about making decisions on your home. While it takes time and energy to focus on a task and do the research necessary to get the best deal, in the long run it will be worth it. Avoid these common pitfalls of homeownership and you’ll likely save yourself from expensive problems.
