Moving Into Your First Home? Here's What You Need

  • November 25, 2015

Moving into your first home is a big step. It can be overwhelming to get everything organized and set up on time to make your transition smoothly while having necessities ready for you. Here’s what you need to make your move as easy as possible.

Water and Electricity – Schedule to have these services turned on before your move-in date. Whether it’s switching your plan over or turning on a new service, be sure to call ahead so you don’t find yourself without these basics on your first day in your new home.

Mail Forwarding – Make sure you don’t miss out on any correspondence when you move. Head over to your local Post Office or fill out a mail forwarding form online. It’s quick, easy, and ensures you’ll continue receiving your mail even from those people or businesses you forget to update.

Internet and Cable – If you’re going to have Internet and cable in your new home, schedule a time to have these services turned on or installed. Be sure to research new deals in your area if you are moving into a zone that now offers new service providers. Also, many providers offer move-in specials so consider these usually cheaper options to cut down on costs.

Paint – Take inventory of rooms that may need a fresh coat of paint. It’s easier to paint an empty room than a room full of furniture. Set aside a weekend to repaint rooms that need a fresh coat before you move in to avoid the extra hassle.

Appliances – Are the appliances old or not energy efficient? Consider factoring in new appliances into your move-in costs. Not only will it be easier to install new appliances before your home is full of stuff but in the long run it will cut down on your bills if you invest in energy and water efficient appliances.

Address Update – Make a list of places that will need your new address such as your bank, employer, family, credit cards, and online accounts such as Amazon or clothing retailers. Update your address with them a few weeks before you move to ensure your mail is received in a timely fashion after move-in day.
