Moving to College? Follow These Tips

Blog posted On August 21, 2015

Moving away to college can be a little intimidating but a lot of fun. Not sure what to pack? Here are some pointers on what is necessary to bring and what can be left at home:

Pack Light – While your first instinct might be to decorate your new space floor to ceiling, leave some space! New students are often gifted water bottles, posters, pennants, t-shirts, and more with the school colors and logo. There’s really no need to bring your current bedroom setup to college with you. Sometimes it is best to wait and see your new home to evaluate just how much space you have and exactly what you need.

Wardrobe for the Season – Do some research on the weather at your new school, especially if it is a good distance away from where you currently live. You might not need those heavy winter coats until after the winter break so wait to pack them up. A rotating wardrobe is often the easiest to maintain in the smaller closets of campus dorms.

Shower On the Go – Get prepared to shower on the go! One of the most useful college tools is a shower holder with all your toiletries. Grab it, head down the hall, and hang it on the hook. You’re set!

Talk to Your Roommate – Sharing your room with someone you haven’t met? Be sure to reach out to them to meet and discuss what you will be bringing. Why end up with two microwaves when one can bring the microwave and the other can bring the stereo system?

Take Advantage of Sales – Back to school sales are going on now virtually everywhere. From clothes to accessories to dorm room essentials, shop smart and take advantage of sales. But before you hit the stores, you might be surprised to find how many items you already have at home. Save some money and simply reuse what you already own.

Have Fun – Possibly the most important aspect of moving away to college is having fun! Try a new style of decorations, a new color scheme, or some unique desk tools to brighten up your space. Being away from home and what you are used to can come as a shock when you least expect it. So surround yourself with pictures and items that make you happy and feel comfortable. Be creative and make the most out of this incredible opportunity!
