Dealing with a Pest Infestation

Blog posted On October 09, 2015

It creeps up on you when you least expect it. Whether it’s ants, spiders, or other unwanted bugs, pest infestation is not an uncommon issue to deal with as a homeowner. Get in front of the situation and know how you will handle it should the occasion arise.

Prevention – One of the best ways to prevent an infestation of any type of pest is maintaining a tidy home. Make it a habit to put food away and stored properly, remove trash promptly into secure trash bins outside, and ensure a well sealed home. Even the smallest of gaps could allow critters through. Be sure to keep windows, doors, and any other entry points sealed.

Taking Action – If you have a recurring problem that over-the-counter type of solutions seem to be defenseless against, it is time to call in the experts. This is where early preparation comes in handy. Having an infestation can be stressful. So doing your research when your home is pest-free allows you to research thoroughly and without emotional decision-making. Make sure you have a list and contact information ready to go in case you ever need it. You will be thankful later when you are confident you used a company that you have previously researched and was not taking advantage of your situation.

Follow Through – Once the pests have been removed, it is key to follow any pointers the experts provided and making a change to ensure the problem does not keep happening. Putting the prevention tips into use here is a good start to avoiding this situation again in the future.

With all of this in mind, it is always a good idea to remember that when you are searching for and buying a home, a home inspection is incredibly important. Many pest infestations or potential future issues are brought to light in the inspection. So while you might want to save money while searching for a home, skipping an inspection is not the place to do it.
